Melissa
fired 9/22/05
As you saw, Melissa had a problem. She had the "I"
syndrome. Now, it's a common problem and we all have it at times, but
there is a way to take care of it.
Just to clarify, if you are in the middle of the
"I" syndrome, it means that "I" or "me"
has come out of your mouth at least once in each of the first
five sentences, and you find you have no regard for what the other people
are doing or thinking.
Right here, right when you find you have no regard
for what the other people are doing or thinking, is when you can
fix it. The minute you realize you are doing this, here's what
you can do:
Take a deep breath, look around at the people whom you
may or may not be boring, make eye contact and get off the bandwagon
by saying something like, "I'm sorry. I tend to go on and on about
something I'm so passionate about." Then, change the subject.
Do this each and every time you find yourself in that position.
If Melissa would have done that, she would have given
herself a chance to step back and see how she has affected everyone
right at the beginning. She would have seen that she affected them negatively,
and right then and there could have done something about it.
That's my opinion. Let me know what yours is?
